Here is a question for someone with an older OS: could you hit alt/option, the "U", then "U" again to see if it makes the "ü" symbol? I do a "lot" of German homework and to me having this feature on my soon-to-arrive classic system is a "must".

Indeed you can. Even ß is available, as option-s.
