Office 2001

Forum IndexMac OS 8.0 - 9.2.2

Where would the best place be to find Office 2001 for OS 9 for a reasonable price? What are the specs for this -- does it run under OS 7.6.1 or just 8.6+?
You could, perhaps, fluke a cheaper copy somewhere else, but as a plain old reliable source, eBay is hard to pass by.

Addendum: Office 98 has min. requirement of PowerPC processor, System 7.5.2, 16MB and VM on, 80-150MB of HDD space. It runs quite as snappily in Classic Mode as under OS 9.2.2, but it is still a Microsoft app. Office 2001 probably does at least as well as far as OS support goes, but some seller on eBay may display/tell you its system requirements.

Requirements for Office 2001 Mac Edition - apparently OS 8.1 is the minimum for Office 2001.

That makes sense. It precludes all 68030 and lesser machines. However, many 68040-based Macs would not have the installed RAM to deal with the full Office suite, and would be dog-slow with 3x and 4x multiples as VM.

I thought Office 6 ran on 68k. Then again, I could have just made that up as I've tried ever so hard to remove all memories of that steaming pile of cra... junk called Office 6 from my mind.

Peace,
Drew

[Edit, excuse me. It was indeed Office 4 (but MS Word 6) that was such a piece of junk.]

Well this is cool -- so now I need to get my buns out there to look for 2001. I really don't want to pay too much, so hopefully I can find someone with it for sale cheaply out on some message boards, or on Craigslist.
Are you familiar with Microsoft's licensing techniques? You will need a benefactor or a miracle to get a copy cheaply, and even then 'cheap' second-hand MS products carry the risk of being unusable. eBay auctions such as this, for never-used copies, do not usually stay near their starting prices precisely because of the need for the authentication keys that come with the software.

Office 2001 for Mac doesn't require activation - the Mac products have never needed activation, only Windows XP and Office XP (2002) and later require activating. For older Windows versions and all the Mac versions you just need a serial number that is valid - it doesn't matter how many times it's been used before, as there is no communication between your computer and MS telling them that you're installing it. With the newer versions that have to be activated you have to phone Microsoft after it's been activated several times and explain why it needs activating again, but as long as you've got a reason eg you just bought it second-hand, or reinstalled your PC or whatever, they will give you an activation response code.

It seems reasonably rare - I just checked on eBay.co.uk and two copies have been offered in the last 3 months, one selling for £28 and the other going unsold with a £26 starting price. Rather expensive then...

Yep. I don't know anything about Office 2004, but i can confirm that Office v.X does not require activation in any way, shape, or form.

Yeah, I enjoy being able to re-install my Office 2004 installation on every new Mac I get without having to worry about calling in for activation. Makes me happy!

I have Office 98 already that I will be putting on my 1400c when it comes in... although I still wonder if 2001 would be a better choice for modern computing.
I don't think it really matters...they're all compatible with Office 97/2000/XP/2003 format.

Yeah for sure, its just a matter of visual appeal and function, I guess. 98 should work fine for me. Sad
