OK, yet another OS 7 question. On the 1400c with OS 7.6.1, is there a wireless card that will be useable?
I have WAP encryption on my network -- will that work out OK?

Wireless will work on 7.5 or higher using the WaveLAN drivers for WaveLAN Silver or Gold cards. I don't know if any ORiNOCO drivers work on 7.5/7.6, but I doubt it. Both drivers work on the same cards, though, and as long as it isn't a CardBus card, it will probably work in the 1400.
WAP is not a possibility for Macs that cannot run OS X. 128-bit WEP encryption is the best you can do.
Peace,

The WaveLAN cards are a good choice. Another option is the Proxim/Terabeam Skyline. There are drivers that will work with 7.5 on up. That's what's in my 3400s. The cards don't seem to play nice with putting the 'books to sleep, though. About a third of the time, the cards stop working after bringing the 'book out of sleep. Minor annoyance; I can't complain too much, since I got the cards for something like 10 or 15 dollars.

OK, I think I will try out one of the Proxim cards. That probably does mean that I will have to switch my network password to WEP instead...
Just out of curiosity, is the ability for WAP somewhere at the OS-level? Is that why it wouldn't work in OS 7? [/url]

I think a Romabout card would work. There are drivers avaliable that would probably work.

WAP is driver level. System 7+ could support it if drivers had that capability. The thing is that WAP didn't get big until OS 9 was already discontinued...

Digging up yet another old thread...
WAP? When dealing with wireless, the usual meaning of "WAP" is "Wireless Access Point", which is the base station.
The two things you could be referring to are WEP or WPA, both types of wireless security.
WEP is the older, insecure type. I know that WaveLAN drivers support WEP, at least on later OSes. Not sure about on earlier.
WPA is a much newer standard, and has ZERO support in anything older than OS X 10.2. Which means no WPA support in 7.6.1 (or even 9.2.2, for that matter.)

Thanks for the correction re. WAP and WPA! Of course we did all mean WPA. Good on you for keeping us honest!
Peace,
Drew

System 7 Today probably has the best information about doing anything in 7. It's a good place to keep in your bookmarks.

This site is your friend when it comes to wireless under the Classic Mac. It has helped me find drivers for wavelan/orinocco cards that I have so I can surf the internet on my Powerbook 1400c
