Finally getting my G3 PowerBook working!

Forum IndexPCI Power Macs & PowerBooks

For a while now, my Lombard has been out of action, due to a bad power in / sound board. (at least, im about 99.9% sure that is the issue). I just received an email saying that the part is shipping tomorrow. I am really looking forward to getting my old 'book back on her feet. Very Happy

Dunno about 'rescue'. I got this particualr 'book new (in '99, iirc) and used it allmost daily, even after getting a 17" G4 PowerBook. Then, about a year ago, it died Sad and i sat it on a shelf in my misc. bits closet. However, i always wanted to get it running again, so i did a little research, which led me to believe that the power in / sound board had died. I should be receiving my replacement part sometime next week, at the latest.

I'm really excited to get it working again.

It's actually my G3 'book that im repairing. I only mentioned the G4 when i made the point that i still used the G3 almost daily, even after getting the G4. But, yes, your right, they are both awesome machines.

Oh, do not get me going on the thought of having two batteries in at once! I'm going to Germany next month and would give *anything* to have longer battery life than what my 12" PB offers for being on the flights. Have fun with this bad boy!
... or not. It now appears, after swapping in the power / sound baord, that my CPU is toast as well. So, now, i have a choice:

a) buy a new 400 MHz CPU for over $100 (which is a hefty chunk of change to put into this machine), or...
b) buy a new 333 MHz CPU for significantly less $.

Yeah, im not entirely sure what im going to do at this point.

Anyone know if this CPU upgrade would work in a Lombard? I may use this as an excuse to upgrade.

No, it wont. That is for wallstreet only.

However, this will work fine in a lombard. G4/433MHz speeds in a lombard for $260, not bad.

Ok, knowing that, i'll probably just buy a replacement 400MHz CPU. I mean... How much of a speed increase am i going to see with a 433 MHz G4, over a 400 MHz G3? As well. it appears they don't sell it as a user installable bit, according to that website, i'd have to send my 'book to them, which i am not doing.

I've decided im not going to go for the upgrade. I'll problably just pick up a 400MHz CPU. I want to get this machine working ASAP.
