problems with a performa 6360

Forum IndexPCI Power Macs & PowerBooks

Hello,
I'm new here and was wondering if somebody could help me.

I have a Performa 6360, and I was cleaning it since it had about 7 years worth of dust stuck in the chassis.

Anyway, I pulled the cd drive out and cleaned the rest of the mac, when I put it back together and booted it, It wouldn't read any mac formatted cds at all.

I get one of the following errors, a error type -127, it pops up with a message saying the disc can't be used because it couldn't be found, or it says the disc needs to initialized.

The wierd thing is that it can read pc formatted cds and UDF formatted cds.

It worked right before I started to clean it, since i was playing a game from the cd drive.

I've tried zapping the PRAM, making a basic install of OS 8.0, checking all connections, and nothings worked.

Here are the specs of the system:
Macintosh Performa 6360
Hard Drive: 15.6 GB IDE
CD: Apple 8x SCSI Internal CD Drive
OS: Mac OS 8.0
RAM: 32MB
I've owned the system for 8 years now and would like to get it up and running again.

Thanks in advance,
Steven

EDIT:
Also, when I try to boot the system with a CD, it starts to boot, gets to the happy mac logo, then the cd spins down, and ejects.
-127... Internal File System error. You probably already knew that. I've never had that problem, but I'm sure someone around here can comment with more assistance than I can.

I'm not sure what sort of damage to the drive itself could cause this issue with HFS (while still reading others), but the fact that it began after you handled the unit sure implies a hardware problem to me.
I might be able to test that theory as soon as my Power Mac 6100 arrives from my old house, then I can see if it's an SCSI problem or the drive itself.

Plus, I can't even open the drive to check the laser or anything else because it seems like it has clips holding the thing together internally.
