68KMLA Moderators
Has anyone spoken to any of the mods on 68KMLA? Is it gone for good? Does anyone know exactly what happened? Does anyone want to try and recreate the site? Does anyone have a back up of the site?

Inquiring minds want to know.

no, dont worry, the site is not gone for good! basically wat ive heard from the mods and other users is tht the vdeck server went down, and hopefully tom levens will be able to get the backups and put it on temp hosting.

THE 68KMLA SHALL RETURN!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Que dramatic, yet glorious music!)
Well, it appears progress is being made. Today I get a Sad Mac with a 403 Forbidden error beneath it instead of that vDeck server message. Hopefully it will be back up and running soon!
yea, but you have to give props to alk for letting us use his forum as a replacement!
I talked to tomlevens a bit a day or two ago. He said that a backup has been located, and they are just waiting for the company to get it to them so that they can pop it back up.

Also, the old forum archives are back up at:

  • B&W Power Macintosh G4
  • Power Macintosh 6500/225
glad to hear the forums are coming back soon
I can't wait for the 68k MLA to come back. I was never a member before, but I sure want to be now!

Both here, and perhaps rather more at Applefritter, there has been concern and enquiry about the seeming, or perhaps temporary, demise of the 68K MLA. Various internal—administrative or mechanical—causes for the shut-down have been floated by many familiar screen-names, and the silence from the Army's officials has occasioned comment.

However, the cause need not be internal. Consider Applefritter's published and ongoing attitude to software distribution, to be no more explicit than that. Consider the 68K MLA's sometimes cavalier attitude to the same matter. Look at this as an example of the same attitude transplanted from there to this Forum.

It is not a remote possibility that 68K MLA is off the air while it is being 'cleansed' under pain of ... you name it.

Verb. sap., gentlemen of the PPC MLA.

Surprised I hope that is not the case! What happened to AppleFritter, did they get into trouble for something (or do they have a strict no-warez rule)? (I'm not on there so I'm not familiar with it) Is it actually illegal to discuss or even link to warez though, or just to upload/host/use it? As wouldn't Google get shut down otherwise as they link to warez, serials etc, as well as all the warez forums that have a disclaimer saying they're not doing anything wrong because they merely link to warez and talk about it, as opposed to hosting it?

From what I can make out it seems as though something went wrong with the server that it was on, though what the delay with getting it back up is I don't know. Someone on the 68k Facebook group, which I'm not a member of but have been keeping an eye on for news of what's happeneing, said that another site they know of went down on the same day as it was on the same server, which seems to me like quite strong evidence for that cause.

Further to the above, I just found this from one of the admins, confirming that it was a server crash and that the 68kmla will be back (Very Happy), so stop worrying so much everyone! Razz

I can't believe they didn't have their own backup!! How silly! I used to run quite a small forum a few years ago and I used to back it up every day - takes no more than a few minutes.
Any news as to how the progress is going? I used to love lurking there.... Arrow Arrow

Also, aren't the downloads of OS's up to 7.5.5 available for free now? That doesn't seem like the downloads of those should be any sort of problem.
Even on CD its fairly easy to find: Look for any LC/Performa 520, 550, 575, Mac IIvx, or Quadra System CD. I have an LC575 System CD and it has 7.1, along with CW2.1, ClickArt, Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing, At Ease 2, among other things.

Yeah, it's taken a while now, 68kmla still not up Sad

We either get "site cannot be found"
or a sad mac
or advertising for "768 web space"

The last one advertising web space..... when the reason you can't see what you want is because of a problem with web space???
