I don't like gravedigging, but it seems that otherwise there'll be a whole lot of duplicate threads over and over.

Yeah, there are lots of zombie threads. It's kind of entertaining and keeps me guessing: which thread will be next?!

I'm not complaining, though.

i frown on wiki's because the screwball nature of the interface impedes flow of information

any other documentation system allows joe blow to use a wysiwyg and hit submit for approval, and its much easier to encourage behavior

Just because a thread has fallen out of use doesn't mean the topic is no longer of interest to anyone. I won't start a new thread when there is an existing thread that can be bumped back up to the top, otherwise the information on the topic is broken up into multiple threads and people have to dig to find what they want to know. Most forums merge threads with similar topics anyway so resurrecting the old threads saves the mods some work when there gets to be too many. And with the low traffic here, a two year old thread may only be the 4th or 5th one down the queue.

This was a thread that was all about clutter, and had no rails to fall off.

Both posts were obviously meant as light-hearted.

Really, osgeld, chill. Right now, 3 of your 5 posts seem to be very defensive. Just chill down, take a deep breath, and if you don't like what's being said in this thread, stop reading it. You seem to be taking it way too seriously.

As an added note, I don't think most moderators have problems with members of the community working on steering discussions in the right direction. I know I personally have no problem when I look at a thread where someone has suggested something like "let's just not go there" or "hey, the forum rules say we should keep it civil" in their post, (along with other content, there's no reason to make posts that only do moderating when you're, y'know, not a moderator, or at least a well-recognized member who has been using the same name on any given community since 2002 or so)

In any situation though, it's also a good skill to know of when to hand something off to the moderators, either by sending a PM to one of them, or using a forum's post reporting system (if/when it has one.)

As far as old threads go. A bit over a week ago when this forum started to see activity, it had just about 2,000 total posts. A larger forum most of us know about has over 123,000 total posts.

There's a huge difference in the amount of content you'd need to drag through to find an old post, especially one whose latest activity was fully three years ago in 2007. Additionally, threads that old on the other board are probably far longer.

So there'll be a point on this board (like there is on every forum I suspect) where it'll become in bad taste to drag up old threads, just because the discussion was held mainly with people who are not around anymore, people who were way different in 2007 than they are in 2010, and in general, (at least I know this applies to me) not everyone wants to re-read all of that.

(I know I tend to dislike longer threads from that amount of time ago, just because it's... painful, sometimes.)
