I think I've built a pretty sweet OS 9 rig. Does anyone have a better one?

Gigabit G4 Tower
1.7 GHz PowerLogix G4 card. Overclocks up to 2 GHz! Rescued from the recycler, only paid $20 for the tower and card! OS 9 does not use dual processors for general use, so the faster single processor is better.
1 GB RAM - you don't really need much more for OS 9.
100 MHz Bus. I tried to use a QuickSilver with a 133 MHz bus, but the heatsink would not fit Sad

20 GB hard drive. I think some kind of SCSI card and a SCSI drive would be a cool addition. I have some 9.1 and maybe 18.2 GB drives. If they're faster then I would change over.
DVD-ROM drive. Pretty standard.
ZIP drive
Radeon 8500 64 MB card. Also rescued from the recycler. I have a dead Dual 1.25 GHz tower, and if I can't revive it then I'm going to take the Radeon 9000 card and move it over.

Mac OS 9.2.2
Classilla Web Browser
YouTube videos run great on this rig.
iTunes 2, for internet radio, it still works!
4x4 Evolution - 100% max settings, runs great.
Duke Nukem 3D for some classic 3D gaming.

How does 9 even have support for youtube?!

I believe that there's a Flash 7 installer available for OS9, and youtube works with Flash 7.

I've heard it works semi-decently on a fairly moderate G3 system, a beige at 400MHz with example. I'll have to ask the person I knew with a beige who had it going.

Using this procedure you can also get Youtube on Windows 98 and Windows NT4, and it works great on older/slower Pentium III systems. (Just as a comparison to the Mac version)

Pandora streaming radio should also work with Flash 7, at least it did maybe a year ago.

What a way to breathe youtube life into these old machines! I thought they were Youtube dead forever! Is there flash 7 for OSX?

My two primary OS 9 machines are:

B&W G3 with 500 MHz G4 upgrade, 512 MB RAM, stock 13 GB hard drive, stock Apple Zip drive, upgraded with Apple-labeled DVD-RAM drive, ATI Radeon Mac Edition. External LSI SuperDisk drive, using matching B&W Apple 15" VGA Studio Display LCD.

G4 Digital Audio with 1.5 GHz upgrade, 1.5 GB RAM, 20 GB hard drive plus 60 GB hard drive, upgraded with Apple-firmware-flashed "SuperDrive" (it's the same model Apple included,) nVidia GeForce4 Ti4600, Apple 17" ADC Studio Display LCD.

Why would you want Flash 7 on OS X? I imagine it's extremely buggy and insecure. Flash 10.whatever is available for Mac OS X, and that's the version that's probably the best to use.

It's very very possible, but it would also reduce functionality on flash-based applications like Buzzword, and it may be a significant security risk.

If Jobs were to have his way of course, Mac OS X wouldn't have third party runtimes (Flash) at all. It's also said that "plugins" (Flash) is the number one cause of application crashes on Mac OS X today.

My best OS 9 rig (actually dedicated to running OS 9) is my beige G3 upgraded to a 1 GHz G4 with an 80 GB HD, 320 MB of RAM, and a Radeon 9200. It plays Unreal Tournament really well!

Also, it runs Classilla pretty well, but I have to admit that I haven't tried it with YouTube.

I cobbled it together from parts I had lying around this winter so I could do some coding in REALbasic 4. I wish I had more RAM, but at this point buying RAM for a dead-end machine is not productive for me. Wink

My fastest Macs that *COULD* run 9 are my 1.67ghz G4 Powerbooks but I have Leopard on them so no go. My next best machine would be my Digital Audio. it came with Tiger pre-installed but I don't have a copy of Mac OS 9 to install it with. My only Mac running OS X and 9 is my snow G3 700 iMac running 10.2.8 and 9.2.2. The only bootable machine I currently have 9 on is my 6500/250. The rest of my PPC Macs run versions from 7.6.1-8.6.

Right now my best rig is a "vanilla" dual 1.25GHz MDD G4 with 2GB RAM (1.5 in 9.2.2 of course) and a Radeon 9000 128MB Pro, which is the one I develop and test Classilla on. I am strongly considering gritting my teeth and ponying up for a Sonnet MDD upgrade, though -- that would sure make compiles go like gangbusters. Even with some of the crud Wink

cut out of it, it still takes a good 15 minutes for a simple relink and nearly 90 minutes to rebuild from butter upkis.

Also, I'm with Anonymous Freak. Classic is wonderful on my G5, but it sure isn't the same as a native OS 9 boot. But I'm glad it (was) there.

My best is not that great. I have a pismo that has OS 9 on it (400mhz/512MB RAM/20GB/DVD). It is nothing special. Eventually I would love to have one of the last G4 powerbooks that could boot OS 9 natively, which I believe was 1Ghz. They are still rather expensive right now.

For running classic I do have my Mac Mini G4 but it is just not the same.

Having a few ADB accessories, my OS 9 machine of choice is a Rev. 2 B&W G3 upgraded to 1.1GHz, 1GB RAM, Radeon 7000, ATI Rage 128, and DVD recorder (Pioneer, I forget the model #).

It's my animation stand, MPW programming environment, and graphics station. I also use it to burn movie DVDs since my newer iMac has a defective burner.

When I want to use it online or play some emulated games I boot it into Tiger.

My two best OS 9.2.2 rigs are the PowerBook G3 Pismo and Power Mac G4 QuickSilver.

The Pismo: I upgraded to G4 7410 550MHz processor, replaced upper case for new one with AirPort connector (old doesn't have), installed 1GB of RAM for PowerBook G4 500MHz, Transcend Solid State Drive 64GB MLC on IDE and fit the Pioneer K06 DVD±RW.

QuickSilver: Upgraded to Dual Sonnet G4 1.8 GHz, 1.5 GB RAM with copper heat sinks on modules. Video is ASUS (flashed, i created post on The Mac Elite wiki) NVIDIA GeForce 4 Ti4600 128MB AGP, for hard drives i placed the Sonnet 2-ports SATA PCI controller and WD Raptor 74GB for System. Also i replaced the original PSU, for now i use a converted ATX to Mac PSU which is 550W Thermaltake TR2 RX. Drive is Pioneer (yes i love Pioneers) DVR-112DBK. Original AirPort Card also have the place.
