New project. G4 6500. :)

Forum IndexPCI Power Macs & PowerBooks

I picked up G4 7200 upgrade from Sonnet on clearance before they were all gone. My goal is to be able to fool it into working in my 6500. It sits in a PCI slot and has it's own RAM slots which means I can upgrade it beyond the 128mb limitiation built into the 6500 if it works. It only supports Mac OS 9.1 but OS X doesn't work well on these things anyway.

So, will it work and where should I start in trying to fool the installer into thinking my Mac is a 7200 instead of a 6500?
Good question! That would be interesting if it works, though the L2 cache slot upgrades for 6360/6400/6500 are pretty damn speedy and would be my first choice...

You might need to use something like "Wish I Were" to change your Mac's gestalt ID to get the software to install. You could also try using GestLab is Wish I Were isn't modern enough.

Peace,
Drew

There's an old thread on that other forum where I detailed my attempts to use a 7200 card in a 7500. I believe it worked OK.

I think my 7200 card is faulty though. It would freeze up every 10-15 minutes running in the 7200.
Hmm. Actually, I don't recall ever seeing a G4 L2 upgrade... I have a G3/400 and a G3/500. One is in a 6500 and the other is in my TAM. Both are really fast. They feel much faster than they should, and they (subjectively) smoke my G3 upgraded PCI Macs. I haven't done any benchmarks to figure out if my perception is accurate.

Peace,
Drew

I bought it more for the possibility of being able to upgrade to more than 128mb. than for Altivec. There were ebayers selling the G3/500 model for the same price as Sonnet was selling the G4/500 models for at their site so I decided to grab a G4 instead.
