Mac OS ROM files for Mac OS 8/9

Forum IndexNewWorld Power Macs

If you are trying to install Mac OS 8 or 9 to a NewWorld Mac, you'll need to make sure you have a matching Mac OS ROM file for your machine. Apple has published a table that shows the Mac OS ROM file that shipped with each Mac and Mac OS version since Mac OS 8.1 on the original bondi blue iMac.

Interesting reading, in that the possibilities have been published as a guide to requirements. Not addressed is the matter of upgrades in OS. It has to be presumed that upgrades (eg, the advisable progression from 9.0.4 to 9.1 to 9.2.1 to 9.2.2 in CRT slot-loading iMacs) is catered for with later versions of the Mac OS ROM file, as it would be in any other OS 9-bootable Mac. So, not having the original ROM version need not result in Doom and Gloom, and could even add capability such as 48-bit LBA awareness. Natheless, it makes clear what the original departure points were.
