I ended up taking a Lombard on my long trip. It held up like a true champ, took all the abuse, but it's heavy and uses assorted PC cards I have to switch in and out. (I got tired of fiddling with Pismo parts, and gave in and took the Lombard.)
So I got me an iBook 600 on eBay. It could use a little more RAM and an Airport card; I'll use the ones intended for the Pismo project. I believe it's the one from late 2001.

Awesome! I love iBooks. That chiclet design strikes me just right, somehow. Plus, you can strip the paint off that iBook 600 and do some cool mods...
I'm in the midst of my own iBook mod. I picked up an iBook G3 800 from OWC recently for a song (cheaper there than 1st gen dual USB iBooks are on eBay, go figure), and I've got a parts iBook 600 that I stripped the paint off. As soon as I come up with a cool design, I'll be the proud owner of a custom, unique iBook G3 800!
Peace,
Drew

LOL, I actually named it Chiclet. I have put in the airport card, works great. I put in the 512MB card I had in the Pismo, that worked without a hitch before I dismembered it, but the iBook is choking on it. First it thought it was only 256. Then it saw all 512 but had a major spasm. Now it is fine but again just sees 256. I would have thought if the Pismo liked it, the iBook would, too, but no.
