#^%!$%*@(*! Dead dual 1 GHz...
Frackin' heck! (Gotta keep this forum family-friendly, after all.)

Just went into the workshop, smelled "The Smell", and realized I couldn't hear my Power Mac G4 Digital Audio with dual 1 GHz upgrade running. Went over, and it had definitely fried itself.

From what I can tell, the fan on the upgrade card had gone out. One of the surface-mount chips on the bottom of the CPU card (capacitor, maybe?) had burst. Everything else looks fine, but dangit!!!

I have temporarily put in a 466 MHz G4 from my other G4 tower, but that's a heck of a speed hit, from dual 1 GHz to 466 MHz. And Leopard isn't quite 'speedy' any more.

Anyone know of a cheap source for a dual G4 upgrade card?
Probably best you're going to do nowadays is find a dual 1ghz Quicksilver processor card and run a wire from a spare power connector to the screw hole that gets power from the metal stud it rests on in the Quicksilver case. You can do a Google search for the procedure of doing it without frying the CPU or your motherboard. New CPU upgrades for the G4's are getting hard to find.
