i know this can be done i would like to sync folders on 2 different machines then if changes are made to files in either folder they will update.
i have searched this i know this is stnd for notebook users but what about 2 desktop users?.

The same procedures used for notebook machines should easily apply to desktops, if you already know the procedure for laptops, then just follow those.

well thats the problem i do not know how to sync folders. do i need additional software ?

I haven't done this before so I'm not just rusty on it, but there's nothing on which rust could have formed.
Although, for 99usd/year, you can get Apple's dotMAC service which includes a syncing tool. Also take a look at the iSync applications, but I think that that's really just the app that you use to perform the .mac data sync.
there are various other apps online, and of course, you could just connect the two machines and copy the data back and forth manually.
Those more in tune with UNIX than I will be able to tell you about shell scripts or whatever you can set up to compress and sync data between
