My somewhat whimsical thread about Politics and Platforms brought up a deeper issue. Many of us technophiles regard the policies of a politician relevant to technology, fair use, and privacy issues with extra attention compared to those who are less involved in the online community. To that end, I offer this editorial for your consideration:

The article doesn't actually propose that the suggested scenario is actually the status quo. Rather, it poses the somewhat concerning question of "what if it is the status quo?"

We humans shall always stumble blindly into the fog, nowadays with even more insidious traps inside it, because we embrace technology before we look at its visage. My Doctrine of Unintended Consequences has been vindicated time and again by the outcomes of development, availability and widespread use of (exempli gratia) soluble morphine (heroin), DDT, mobile phones, the World-Wide Web, television as 'entertainment', electronic data capture, increasingly invasive medical procedures, etcetera ad nauseam.

Do not mistake that as bagging Science, but as a dislike of witless technological exploitation of scientific discoveries in advance of even cursory attempt to predict disadvantages, and thereby to ameliorate them. None can see the future clearly through the fog, and there will always be unpredictable outcomes despite the best guesses of the forward-looking prudent ones amongst us. But not even to canvass the possibilities is sheer bovine stupidity. If some outcome is possible, it will happen, whatever it is.
