I have 10.3.9 installed on my clamshell iBook. Recently the Terminall app started crashing at launch. I've repaired permission with Disk Utility and Onyx to no avail. I've also tried starting up the iBook in single-user mode, but just get a repeating error message like this (from memory):

Hmm. Is this a new install of 10.3.9? Have you changed your shell from bash to something else?
Peace,
Drew

Old install, haven't changed anything... the only thing I use on this one is Telnet and Lynx. Everything ran fine until *suddenly* Terminal refused to launch.
Is it possible to reinstall the Unix stuff without touching OS X???

Did you ever try the command chsh?
Try renaming ~/.cshrc and ~/.login (if they exist) to something else.
Peace,
Drew

I do believe you can reinstall the unix bits without the rest of the system. They're called BSD Tools or some such shenanigans. (CD 1 or 2 of a 10.3 set) Once reinstalling them you will probably want to reinstall the combo updater too.

I'm still leaning towards a configuration problem. I had similar difficulties on one of my Macs at one point where Terminal would quit on launch, and it turned out to be a problem with how I had configured the app. Unfortunately, I can't quite remember just what the problem was and how I fixed it.
What exactly is the error that is displayed when you launch the Terminal app? Can you ssh into the Mac remotely?
Peace,
Drew

Okay, I can connect but I immediately get disconnected after "Welcom to Darwin".
I reinstalled all the BSD packages with Pacifist, but that didn't help either...[/img]

Update:
Never figured out what was wrong, but other apps started crashing at launch (oddly enough, only ones that come bundled with OS X), so I wound up reinstalling OS X completely... problem solved.
