I am having a bit of trouble trying to get my installation of Mac OS 9.2.1 to boot from my thumb drive. I have a PowerMac G4/500Mhz and the only OS on my HDD is Ubuntu 7.04. Is there a simple key combination I could use at startup to get it to boot from the thumb drive? thanks. I posted this here because I want to run my new copy of Microshaft Winblows 98.

Try holding command-option-shift-delete.

I don't think those Macs were able to boot off the USB ports. Firewire most definitely, but I doubt it can boot from USB. The only Macs that I know of which can boot from USB are the Mactels.

I know my 500MHz G3 PowerBook from the same era CAN boot 9.2.1 off of a USB flash drive. What I'd do is just boot from CD and...
important bit here
use disk utility to format the usb thumb drive. You can only boot from it if the partitioning is laid out in Apple Partition Manager/APM format. (likewise, Intel Macs can only boot from a GUID partition.)
Install OS9 onto the drive.
Use the startup disk contro panel on the OS 9 cdrom to select the USB drive.

Well, I don't yet know if a G4/500 will work with those instructions, but other newer machines will work fine. The major thing is that the machine has to have two USB buses. So PowerMac G3s won't work because they only have one USB bus. I think certain iMacs do work though. I'd have to check applespec or something.

Dual USB busses is the requirement, eh?
I was pretty sure that just about any Mac with built-in USB could boot OS 8-9 from a USB drive. OS X doesn't allow booting from USB 1.x drives, however.
Unless I'm mistaken (which is possible), I recall booting my Pismo from a USB CD-R with a Mac OS 9 CD.
Peace,
Drew

I've booted OS X from a USB ATA adapter over the USB 1.1 bus on my 600MHz G3 iBook.

Yeah, the pismo has dual usb buses because I've been booting my pismo off of a usb flash drive with 9.2 installed on it.
A b/w g3 or a tray-loading iMac wouldn't be able to boot from a USB device, however.
