Slow opening of Safari 1.3.2 solved

Forum IndexMac OS X

As promised in this thread, I have to report that the 16-17 bounces of the Safari icon in the Dock at opening have been reduced to two.

Removing Users/self/Library/Preferences/com.Apple.Safari.plist file to the Desktop, and restarting Safari effected no improvement. In fact, the new .plist created at the opening of Safari reintroduced the default garbage of Bookmarks that I had previously thrown away.

Safari/Empty Cache effected no improvement. History/Clear History had no effect.

Removing Users/self/Library/Safari/Icons/ to the Trash, and restarting Safari, was completely effective. The Folder contained 6.3MB of the small address-line icons that are also reproduced in the Bookmarks lists, accumulated over two or more years. Seemingly, loading this burden at the opening of Safari was solely responsible for the 16-17 bounces of the Safari icon in the Dock. QED.

As a codicil to the above, but now related to the recent Safari betaUpdate 3.0.2 for Tiger, my copy has been installed since a few days after the upgrade to 10.4.10. There has been time since then to accumulate five days' worth of History in Safari. Clicking Bookmarks has been taking longer and longer to open the list, which is something quite new (to me) in any version of Safari. No such thing had ever happened with Safari 1.3.2 under Panther, for example. On the offchance that this was also a slowdown as the result of having to load a large accumulation of files, I cleared the History in Safari 3.0.2. Bingo! Instantly, thereafter, clicking on Bookmarks brought up the list of bookmarks.

Strange to find a built-in flaw of this kind in a potentially new version of an application.

Peace,
