That's a terrific article, Drew. I'm certain that this will help a ton of folks out there (myself included)! Thanks for putting that info together.

I echo tomlee59's appreciation, with a couple or more of observations. One is a typo. Quandary rather than quandry.
I suggest that the potential risk in altering Drive Setup with ResEdit be ameliorated with a much-nearer-to-the-beginning injunction to hack a copy only of the app. This is a universal first step in use of ResEdit.
Third, you may be a little hard on Silverlining. This is from the Information pane of Silverlining about a partitioned 4.2GB IBM drive. Note that LaCie makes liberal, although not exclusive, use of Apple drivers:

The greatest impediment that Silverlining offers to Drive Setup is that the latter baulks at replacing it when that is attempted. Since one would not install Silverlining but to replace Drive Setup, that is not entirely a handicap. Yes, Silverlining finds it difficult to grasp some drives by the ears to mount them. So do FWB's HD ToolKit, InTech's HD SpeedTools and ATTO. This happenstance is rare-ish, and usually argues that a bigger hammer is needed. Reformatting from an existing FAT system is, however, usually a breeze with Silverlining, which has the great advantage of a much more illuminating GUI than any of the others.
