Apple M4551 Revision B (blueberry) LCD

Forum IndexConquests & Recruits

just got it yesterday, sans power supply, which will be a **** to find. This thing is very nice, in like new condition. the tilt and swivel stand is nice. it's built like a tank too, and HEAVY for an LCD. It's got 2 ADB inputs (there is an ADB lead at the end of the VGA cable), and RGB and S video inputs in a little mushy rubbery door (honestly, the way the monitor is built, I expected the door to be tough plastic on a hinge). It also has a speaker out port. I plan to hook my PS2 up to it, and see if I can find a splitter at rat shack for the set of speakers I have duct taped to the sides of my printer, so both my mac and my PS2 can share the audio.

one other nice thing about it is it looks to be VERY adjustable. I can lift it up by the handle in the back, it raises and lowers about 8 inches, the panel tilts every which way, and there are about a dozen buttons on the underside on the front to control it. It looks like I switch between the computer and my PS2 by pressing a dedicated button.

I know the revision A of this one, had the DE-15 port, and was translucent black, other than that, the revison A and B are the same, even sharing the same model number.

Then there was the bastard of the family: the Revison C/M7613. it was graphite, DVI input, "security ring", audio and video inputs and ADB eliminated for 2 USb ports behind the door, and from what I can see in the manual, only a power button, the rest is controled in software.

so, whatcha think of my haul? funny thing: the panel part (non bezel) is the same width as the old Dell ES-17 17" CRT's tube (not counting the bezel). odd. Oh, the extra space I freed up from the super deep CRT behind the LCD has already been discovered by my cat, but that is where the PS2 will go.

Nice, those have always seemed like nice panels, and from your description, it's pretty much confirmed, either version would be cool.

oh yeah, it is real sturdy. the part that makes it tilt and swivel is steel!!

I did track down a power adapter on ebay.co.uk. Please, nobody bid on it!! I need that. It's £10.00 shipped, which by today's standards is $19.852. That is CHEAPER than the 3rd party/custom made ones on the US ebay. And this one is a genuine apple part.

wish me luck.

Yeah, power adapters for them regularly go for about $25 - $40. The display is nice. I've got one of each model (two of the Rev A if you count the one I gave to my sister). They are really sweet. Be careful with the telescoping neck, though. The metal ribbon inside has a tendency to snap off the retaining tabs forever removing the ability to adjust the display up and down...

Enjoy the AV. That's definitely the best feature.

Don't discount the DVI display too much. It is brighter than the analog ones, and it has a built-in USB port. It would be perfect it if would accept composite video as well...

Did yours come with the kickstand VESA mount? It lets you use the display like a picture frame or like the ADC LCDs... The only drawback is that the adjustment and power buttons become inaccessible in that mode.

Peace,
Drew

Sweet, I was given a couple of those with my beige G3 Smile With adapters luckily though, sorry to hear you didn't get one, it can be a real pain to track down adapters sometimes. Mine are the dark blue ones with the old-style Apple display port though (I presume you meant blue not black). Is yours one of the lighter coloured ones that came out with the B&W G3 to match its colours and VGA port then?

The stand is dead on one of mine though (that's why I picked up a second one Razz although I decided to keep both in the end), it's stuck in the lowest position. I don't adjust the other one; hopefully that will preserve it.

Whereabouts did you find it?

The stands are just weak - I would avoid adjusting it unless absolutely necessary, although I have heard that some of the later revisions were stronger than the original that I have. However, one of my stands still works and has spent 8 years in an office being pushed up and down by people who didn't own it, so I guess it's just luck whether it lasts or not

Yes, the original is a lovely translucent dark blue - they must have looked so revolutionary back in '98 Smile Heck, they still look great now, even though everyone has flat screens now - back then I don't think I'd even seen a flat screen!

thanks for letting me know about the stand. Wish me luck that mine won't break.

I hooked my PS2 up to the monitor, and lucky for me the wires are thin. I was able to thread them through the corner of the door, the area where you lift the door open, So I am able to close the forr shut fully, and still have the PS2 hooked up. It looks clean and flush too.

Now all I need is a splitter for the set of speakers I have so I can hook them into both the computer and the monitor.

oh, and does ADB share the same wiring as S-video? I know the plugs are the same. the reason I ask is because I want to hook an s-vid cable to the input jack, and thread it out the door so I can hook up my pismo from time to time for an extended desktop. Do you think the monitor will accept 3 video sources, or does it not work like that>

-digital Wink
ADB doesn't use as much shielding as S-Vid, so the quality of the pic by using ADB cables is likely to suffer, sometimes a lot. I remember a thread about it over on AF, but I don't recall how long ago it was.
ah, ok. IK ghave a spare coiled one from an old apple keyboard. I thought I could play the recycler Smile

VESA = Video Electronics Standards Association. They created a standard mount interface so that any LCD could be used with any mount. The Studio Displays are VESA compliant...

You can give the S-Video a try w/ an ADB cable. I think I tried this on an 8100/AV and a Wallstreet. IIRC, the video came out greyscale probably because the pinout was different (patch versus crossover or something like that).

I've tried real S-Video connections w/ a DVD player with no results. I think the display is "smart" in that it only allows one video connection and defaults to the composite connection. If there's no composite video signal, then it scans the S-Video. At least, that's my experience. I've never gotten S-Video to work on mine, but I was also never sure I got a good solid connection because the cable I was using had a particulary fat end on it.

Good luck!
Peace,
Drew

thanks for letting me know. odd that it comes out in greyscale. Actually, I DO have an S video cable from my Apple Presentation System. It's long and thick, but it's gold plated (I believe).

oh, I won a auction in the UK for an offical apple power supply for this LCD. The cost? 23 pounds, which is about 45-46 US dollars.

can't wait to fire it up for the first time.

-digital Wink
ok, it's been paid for, power supply should be here within a week. i'm excited to FINALLY fire this thing up. I put the Dell CRT back on the B&W for another week, since the whole family agreese the dell box is WAY too slow, even running a fresh install of windows 98. However, I have the CRT on the other computer cart, the thing is just slid over, and tilted in my direction. the cables have to stretch a bit, but it works in the interm.

-digital Wink
YES!! got the adapter today. plugged it in, and it works. LCD has not cracks or dead pixels. I was right, it is very nice. One touch, a second later, and i'm in RGB mode. I'm guessing so long as one RGB device is on, I can have two devices hooked up. Don't know if 2 on at the same time would colide with each other in the picture. i'll have to try it.

-digital Wink
Cool Very Happy One of mine has a stuck pixel Sad (though you don't really notice it unless the screensaver is on as it's a bright red dot near one corner on the black background)
