Very cool; I really need to get my WS-II 300 going again, I really need it

my old WS had some bad issues. like the thing would always get way too hot, but from what I have read, that is just the way the series was. it also had the 13" screen, and despite me taping the cable down 3 times, which would only work for a little while, then I would get a bad screen again. which would also work while I squeezed the bezel of the display, which would also only last for a short time.

I did howver mod the display so the apple logo lit up. it's on applefritter. Granted, it was a soft, purplish glow, not nearly as bright as the current macs, but it worked. I know PDQs have the light up logo.

my old one was acutally a hybrid. it was a 233mhz with a 13", but ASP reported it had a cashe. which I know the Series I 233mhz never did, so someone had it repaired somewhere.

I still have not paid for it yet, having paypal issues.

oh, and my old one didnt come with a power adapter, so I went through the repair extension program, and got a yo-yo adapter. the letter in the box said they wanted the old one back by April 30th, 2006. they are still waiting...

oh, and the old one came in a Dell box. /blastphomy

as soon as it gets here, I have a Mac OS 9 kit in a folder on my hard drive that I will burn to a CD. it has wallstreet updates, and a bunch of software, but not the 9.1, 9.2.1 and 9.2.2, as they wont fit, and I can easily get them off the software update CP.

oh yeah, I grabbed a custom wallstreet icon set, and some special things out of the Mac OS 8.2 beta, including the special network CP, which looks better, and the gizmo and hi-tech themes.

Not too bad a price. I was trying to find a Wallstreet some months back but could never get a decent price for a bundle that had everything in it that I wanted (e.g. CD module!!!) >.>

I got my other (problimatic) wallstreet back in December of 2005 for $50. it worked great for about 3 months, then I decided to junk it. it's been dead ever since. I was looking for a fast apple portable that is fairly modern. I got a 1400, and it is nice, but the battery doesnt last too long. I was also thinking of the 3400, as it had built in etherent and modem, both in the same jack, and there is a nice one on my local CL, which I may liberate soon, just because.

but the wallstreet is an ideal mac. it has a full line of legacy ports, 2 expansion cards for new stuff, takes alot of ram, has 2 expansion bays, and it is built like a tank, a ture road warrior.

ok, just sent out payment today. had to get a withdrawl. But it's in the mail, and i'll get a tracking number (I assume) as soon as it is shipped. I'll take unboxing pics, like I did with my SE on the 68kmla, but I have no place to upload them, and nothing to hook my phone to my computer with. sucks, I know, but I may just end up investing in one if I keep liberating.

I got my Wallstreets out today. One is a Series 2 266mhz running 10.2.8, has 384mb ram, 14.1" display, a 40gb hard drive, a zip drive, a DVD drive, DVD card and a Dell TrueMobile 802.11b card. The second one is a Series 1 running 10.2.8, has 256mb, 14.1" display, a 40gb drive, CD drive and a Dell TrueMobile 1150. The third one is a 233 Series 1 that has minimal ram, 12" display and very little drive space. I think it's running 8.6 and I haven't done anything with it yet. I have some spare SODIMMs, an Orinoco Gold card and a 60gb drive for upgrades. I think I'll make this one a OS 9 only machine.

The fourth one is a 232 Series 1 that has issues with either the DC/Sound board, battery board, PMU board or a combination of all of them. It also has a 14.1" display and is probably repairable.

hmm, after reading the LEM profile, I am getting worred the 40gb hard drive I have wont work. there is a chance, but it's ATA-6, but LEM says wallstreets are semi-incompatible with ATA-6 and ATA-7, and to stick with ATA-5.

could anyone verify this? it's a Hitachi Travelstart, model HTS428040F9AT00.

googleing, not only did I find it's ATA-6, but it's got a 2mb buffer, which should help with it's slow 4200RPM speed, which I have known about, since it's printed on the label.

I had a bad experience with a IBM travelstar that died in my old mac, a 20gb. the original Fijustu 4gb is also dead. I also lost a toshiba 20gb, and 30gb, so i dont really trust them. my mother also had a 60gb seagate go dead after only a year in her laptop, so I dunno about them, though I do have a 120gb seagate powering this mac, and it's been in it for almost a year.

I know, all parts fail, but I have a few Western Digital HDs that are a decade old, but still continue to hum along, right next to another 2gb WD. maybe I should get one of those...

I wouldn't worry. While it was true when ATA-6 was new that the Wallstreet had some problems with those drives, most recent drives don't pose any problems for the Wallstreet.

For what it's worth, I ran a 40 GB IBM TravelStar 40GXN in my Wallstreet for ages. It never had any problems at all.

oh, I have a question for you alk, since you wrote classicstumbler. I have 2 wifi PC cards, and I dont think there are classic mac drivers for them, nor will your utility work with either of them, but I want to know. The first one is a Linksys WPC11 version 4, and it's 802.11b only. the other one is a Belkin F5D7010, and it's 802.11g/b. Do these work at all? if not, then what chipset are they, and how might I go about getting them working in OS 9? I think they'll work in X, but i'm gonna use 9 for now, as I only have 192mb of ram, and i'd rather have the snappier GUI.

Hmm, looking at the bids on that auction, it seems that some crazy freak named iamdigitalman wanted that thing bad.

ok, it arrived yesterday. the upper case was cracked. I replaced the plastics, and all is well. I made a topic over on applefritter to get it working. I will let you all know if I do.

also, the VST drive is light!! lighter than my ide one in my B&W. will it work with the standard iomegaware, or did VST produce special drivers for it?

I'm pretty sure that it will work with the standard drivers.

I've wanted one of those LS120 drives for mine. It seems like a good design choice - allow floppies, but also allow high capacity 120 MB disks.

Have you gotten the WS running?

Yeah, I got it running 2 days after getting it. It was a bad CPU card. I swapped the 300 for my old 233, and it booted right up, 192mb and all. now I need to figure out how to get the batteries to charge, and I would be all set.

Have you tried the Battery Reset program? That might get them charging again. I've also rescued a "dead" battery using the VST battery charger. It seems to have the ability to reset some batteries that have corrupted settings...

just an update: after running 9.2.2 and 10.2.8 for some time, X developed some oddites that were too much. as soon as it finished booting, it would shut off the backlight. no proble, as I just hit the brightness button, and it came back one. But, it also did this when waking up from sleep, and I couldnt turn it back on. I know the display was working, as a strong light showed what was on it, but this got annoying. It was not like this when I first installed it. And seeing as how Lowendmac did not accept my article for My Turn (I could upload it here if anyone wants to read it), I decided to wipe the drive, and install 9.2.2. What's the point of having the DVD kit if it does not work in OS X? So, when my pismo comes, I will swap the hard drives, as the pismo will be my main laptop, and the 6gb from it will go in the wallstreet. I will be turning the wallstreet into a media machine. DVD, MP3, videos, etc. it will run 9.2.2 fulltime on 64mb of ram. my Lucent Wavelan will provide internets, as it will be on another floor, far from my DSL modem. This will make a nice machine for it's purpose. But first, I may want to use it to play with xpostfacto, as I have never used it before.
