Ubuntu dropping support for PowerPC?!

Forum IndexPowerPC *nix

Well, folks, it looks like it's time for our first organized letter writing campaign if this is true.

As the discussion the AppleFritter indicates, ISOs are no longer available for the PowerPC port of Ubuntu Linux.

Troops, grab your guns.

Peace,
Drew

This doesn't mean the end of the port. All it means is that it's not part of the official team's projects. There is a team that came together to make sure that the "unofficial" PowerPC port will parallel the x86 port to the best of their abilities. Case in point, when Feisty came out, the update for PowerPC computers came up one day later in the Update Manager (even the ISOs are available). Consider that there are a lot of people that are running Ubuntu on PowerPC, especially PowerPC Macs. So long as they decide to continue the port, PowerPC will still be there.

And if not, there's still Debian/ppc which is well-supported. Wink

Remember that Canonical said that if there is still a high demand for the PowerPC version, they may reincorporate it as an official release. Let's hope this is enough for them to do just that.
I just don't understand the logic of this, though.

Many people install Linux as a second OS or after their original OS has gotten tired. As more and more quite capable PowerPC Macs get shelved, and especially if Apple drops support for them in the OS, I could easily see the owners of those machines turning to Linux for a modern OS and modern apps. Discontinuing the "official" release of Ubuntu for PPC just doesn't make sense to me at this time. I'd think there would be _more_ demand for it, not less.

Peace,
Drew
