Suggestion for FAQ development and maintenance

Forum IndexPress Corps

I just posted this re the 68KMLA over in AppleFritter, and thought I'd add it in to the mix here.
For mine, FAQ lists have (at least) two principal broad avenues of utility. One is for those who know not only what they need to know/discover, but also that going to an FAQ list is a good beginning in that process, and how to deal with FAQ lists.

The second is for those who don't know what they need to know, and often cannot even articulate what their needs are, although they do know that they need some knowledge, or even help.

(A third is the obvious economy of effort for all if a structured FAQ list can provide an immediate A, and thereby head off the necessity to rewrite the needed info in a post.)

But for the fact that doing so is unduly coercive—even draconian—posters to a Help forum could well be directed automatically to an FAQ list as soon as they type in their thread title. The oint in that flyment is that they may not even have the jargon for some dumb software to use in redirecting them. How many manufacturers' websites have given you the pip when their FAQ list has only their idea of Qs, which do not match your Qs.

This FAQ construction and cultivation idea was being canvassed at 68k MLA a little while before the forums went AWOL. I remember that there was some unanimity reached, but what it was I wot not now.
